Mental health campaigner honoured at Bedfordshire graduation
Thu 27 July, 2017A dedicated mental health campaigner has received an honorary doctorate from the University of Bedfordshire in recognition of his outstanding contribution to mental health services.
Ben Salmons, who battled his own mental health challenges, created the Break the Stigma initiative to help people across Bedfordshire understand more about the subject and to tackle common misconceptions.
The 34-year-old was supported during his recovery by East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT), which provides mental health services in Bedfordshire and Luton. He is now employed by the Trust to continue his campaign work and encourage healthy, open discussion about mental health through the Break the Stigma campaign.
Ben, from Ampthill, attended the graduation at the University’s Putteridge Bury campus yesterday (26 July) where he was made an Honorary Doctor of Science.
He described the doctorate as a ‘huge honour’ and added: “I really hope it will help others who are struggling with mental health difficulties see that things can get better. When I was ill, I never thought anything like this would be possible, but getting help and support really did turn my life around.”
The University’s Vice Chancellor Bill Rammell praised Ben for his tireless campaign work and said: “This award reflects the University’s highest regard for your achievements.”
Ben joined students from the University’s Faculty of Health & Social Sciences, who donned their caps and gowns to collect their awards in front of proud family and friends.
