Assistance Dogs
Dogs and other domestic animals are not permitted in University buildings or grounds. The
only exception to this rule is for assistance dogs that are trained specifically to help
individuals living with disabilities or long-term health issues. In the UK, it is unlawful to
refuse access to a disabled person accompanied by an assistance dog except in the most
exceptional circumstances (Equality Act 2010). Any assistant dogs on campus must have a
completed and approved application form.
Students and staff are not permitting to bring pets as emotional support animals onto
campus unless they are brought in for an agreed and specific therapeutic purpose, and
through a formalised arrangement with an appropriately recognised organisation, such as
Pets as Therapy, and agreement of Student Support.
The purpose of this document is to provide a framework for ensuring support for students
and staff with assistance dogs, and for alleviating concerns of staff and students.
