Young children on University premises
'Young children' refers to any child under the age of 16
The University accepts that occasionally parents, guardians and carers who are employees or registered students of the University have to visit the University premises to deliver or collect materials connected to their work. Children accompanying employees and students for such brief visits must be 'signed in' at the reception area. The name of the 'responsible adult' must also be recorded. Once they have been signed in, children may accompany their parent, guardian or carer to office areas, refectories and toilets. Responsible adults must accompany children at all times and they must not be allowed to run along the corridors or wander unaccompanied. Young children must not be left unattended at any time.
For reasons of health, safety and welfare, young children are not permitted in workshops, laboratories or studios except when special arrangements have been made during open days, school visits and for activity participation. Corporate managers must ensure that risk assessments are carried out and special arrangements are instigated for these special events.
Children are excluded at all times from kitchen areas and any areas where maintenance and construction works are in progress.
To minimise distraction in a learning environment, children will not be permitted to accompany adults in resource centres and classrooms where lectures and other academic activities are taking place.
Stewards and security staff are obliged to enforce this under the University’s Health & Safety policy.
