Safety tips for international students
Carry your Student ID
It is important to carry your student ID card with you at all times. Not only will it let you access all the buildings on campus, but it can also help you benefit from a range of student discounts on everything from travel to food, drinks and events.
Keep your Passport safe
Make sure you keep your travel documents safe and have photocopies. If you lose your passport or visa while you are in the UK you will need to replace your missing documents. You will need to report a lost passport to the police online and apply for a new passport at your embassy.
If you need help you can contact the International Office on campus for support.
Protect your identity
Your personal information is valuable.
Be careful who you give your personal information to. Be very cautious about giving personal information – such as your age, address, phone number – to people you don’t know.
Identify theft is when your personal details are stolen. Identity fraud is when those details are used to commit fraud. If you fall victim to identify fraud you should act fast. Even though you didn’t order those goods or open that bank account, the bad debts will end up under your name and address.
Action Fraud offers advice on how to keep your details safe and what to do if you have been victim of identity fraud.
Watch out for scammers
Unfortunately some criminals will target international students and claim to be a ‘trustworthy’ organisation. They may make demands for money by claiming there is an immigration issue.
These scammers may trick or frighten you into paying by seeming like it’s very urgent.
Signs to look out for:
- Urgent and dramatic tone, talking about deportation or visa cancellation to scare you
- Requests for immediate payment or bank details
- Limited but accurate personal information about you
If you find yourself in a suspicious situation
- Don’t confirm or disclose any personal details
- Don’t pay - The home office nor the UKCISA would ever ask for money over the phone
- End the call or do not reply
Online bullying and harassment
Bullying and harassment is never OK, whether it’s in person or online, and it can lead to disciplinary action from the University. When this happens online, cyberbullying tends to take place on social media platforms and can include:
- Cyberstalking- persistent messages meant to intimidate or create discomfort
- Spreading lies - posting fake information to harm someone's reputation
- Image-based sexual abuse - sharing intimate photos without consent
- Impersonation - posing as someone else to spread false information or harm reputation
- Up-skirting - taking and sharing inappropriate photos without consent
- Virtual mobbing - encouraging multiple people to harass someone online
