British Values
Understanding British Values
The University of Bedfordshire wants to ensure that all our students and apprentices are responsible members of society who treat others with respect and tolerance, regardless of background, and promotes an understanding British values. These are values that shape our society and are protected by law, through legislation including the Equality Act of 2010
British values include:
- Democracy
- The rule of law
- Individual liberty
- Mutual respect and tolerance
Democracy
Creating a culture built upon freedom and equality, where everyone is aware of their rights and responsibilities. For example, our mechanisms for listening to the student voice; the giving and receiving of feedback; and joint decision making.
Rule of Law
Recognising the need for rules to make a happy, safe and secure environment to live, work and study – through agreed ways of working; clear policies and procedures; disciplinary processes and codes of conduct.
Individual Liberty
Protecting the rights of freedom of expression and the rights of others we work and study with, through the promotion of equality, diversity and inclusion; opportunities for peer support and development; choice and consent.
Mutual Respect & Tolerance
Respecting the values, ideas and beliefs of others whilst not imposing our own on others, by embracing diversity through equality networks, events and cultural celebrations; tackling discrimination through Prevent, Support and Report, and anti-bullying campaigns.
