- Email your unit tutor to advise you have applied for mitigation and that you are awaiting a decision response.
- If you are applying for an extension, if you are able to, we suggest you continue working on your assignment and submit as soon as possible (within 14 calendar days if you have provided acceptable evidence or 7 days if you are applying on a self-certification category), from the submission date. Do not wait for mitigation approval before submitting.
- If you submit your work by the initial assessment deadline (including partial submissions) or attend an exam/submit an exam paper, mitigation does not apply and your submission will be marked. Any mitigation awarded will be invalid.
Checklist for applying for Mitigating Circumstances
Before you apply:
- You should read the academic regulations to understand possible impact and consequences of any mitigation awards including ‘resits opportunities’. This includes being aware of the maximum period you can be registered for on your course.
- If you have any concerns, including details of how a resit may affect your academic course, please contact a member of your course team. You can find the details of your tutors on BREO or you can find your Personal Academic Tutor by logging into E-vision and clicking on the "My Studies" button.
What happens next?
- The team will review your form and any evidence you have provided and you will receive an email with a decision advising you if mitigation has been awarded and what has been awarded. We will advise if your application for mitigation has been refused because it does not meet the criteria or if we require further information from you.
- A maximum of 7 calendar days extension can be awarded for self-certification applications.
- If a longer extension is required, evidence should be provided and maximum of 14 calendar days can be awarded, 56 days can be awarded for a dissertation project.
- If you meet the criteria for mitigation, but the evidence provided is not sufficient/acceptable evidence we can accept (as listed on the form), we will award mitigation under self-certification reason.
- If the assessment type or the evidence provided would recommend/indicate more than 14 days is required, the team may award a ‘resit opportunity’.
- A ‘resit opportunity’ is another opportunity to do the assessment, which is normally a new piece of work. This will be set by the University at the next scheduled opportunity.
