Thinking of Transferring to another course?
The course transfer process enables you to request permission to transfer from your current course to a different course at the University.
What should I do if I want to transfer course?
If you are thinking about transferring to another course, you need to seek advice from your course leader and our support services before submitting your application as you will be required to upload academic approval and support evidence during the application process. Seeking advice is very important as a course transfer can have implications for your studies such as funding or if you are an international student, your visa sponsorship with the university.
Can all students apply to transfer to another course?
Most students can apply to transfer their course however some students cannot transfer their course:
- Apprenticeship Students: If you are an apprentice then you cannot transfer your course. The contract between the employer and the university is for a specific apprenticeship standard which is linked to the course. The only exception are learners on Nursing Apprenticeships who wish to request a change of campus. Nursing apprentices must speak to their employer, link tutor and apprenticeships team in the first instance before applying
- Research Students: If you are a research student, your topic of study is based on your supervisor’s area of expertise therefore you cannot transfer course. However, it may be possible to opt for a MPhil instead of a PhD therefore you should speak to your supervisor or seek advice from the Research Graduate School in the first instance
When can I transfer course?
You must apply and complete a course transfer before you re-register on the anniversary of you first registering on your course. The process must be completed before registration closes so that you are registered on the correct units for your new course.
You should read our Course Transfer Policy which contains important information about the course transfer process, requirements and implications of changing your course. You should also read our Course Transfer FAQs which provides further information on course transfers.
Speak to course leaders to discuss your options.
You will need to speak to the following course leaders as they will need to provide academic approval for your course transfer:
- Course leader for your current course
- Course leader for your new course
You should ensure that you receive written approval (e.g. email) from both course leaders as you will be required to upload this evidence during your application.
It is important to speak to your course leaders as the structure of the two courses need to be sufficiently similar so that you will not be academically disadvantaged by the transfer. In addition, some courses may have different entry requirements and/or PSRB (accrediting body) requirements, so it might not be possible to transfer directly. You may need to apply through the admissions process if you wish to change these courses.
You should seek advice from university support services so that you understand the potential implications of transferring your course and for information on how we can support you during your course transfer. The following support services/staff are available to help (depending on your course and student status):

- Research Students: If you are a research student, your topic of study is based on your supervisor’s area of expertise therefore you cannot transfer course.
