'We Is A Collective Process'

Choreography: Matthias Sperling

Is we not a collective process? Aren’t we constantly negotiating a balance between our own choices and how they relate to others? This work takes a light-hearted yet practical look at some big questions: Can we choose who we are? How are our individual choices about who we are always made in relation to other people? Can the collective situation of performance be an opportunity for making those choices - in real ways, even if it is in small ways? In answer to these questions, the work takes the form of a lively and curious series of decision-making tasks, each one challenging the performers to engage in the process of exercising their freedom, both individually and collectively.

Matthias Sperling

His work has been presented at Dance Umbrella, Southbank Centre, Nottdance and the Royal Opera House (UK), and internationally at Springdance (Netherlands), Les Repérages (France) and Tanztendenzen (Germany). His collaborations with choreographer Siobhan Davies have been presented at the Whitechapel, Hayward, IKON and Victoria Miro galleries. He has collaborated with visual artists including Pablo Bronstein and Hetain Patel on performance works for Tate Modern, the ICA, Tramway and New Art Exchange. Originally from Canada, he has been based in the UK since 1997, where he initially performed with companies including Matthew Bourne's Adventures in Motion Pictures and Wayne McGregor's Random Dance. In his most recent work Do Not Be Afraid, he dons superhero lycra to propose that the dance performer’s superpower is the ability to make their mind visible for an audience, in and through their body. www.matthias-sperling.com

'the other one'

Choreography: Colin Poole

Music: Murcof - Memoria; Klaus Obermeier - edited extracts from Odyssey and North-Northwest.

This piece has been realized over 13 days in collaboration with the dancers. They’ve worked on tasks to explore their uniqueness in moving and searched for kinaesthetic ways to show connections and relationships. Although we've avoided any attempt to present a 'meaning' through this dance we do hope that what we show will find a way to be meaningful. I thank this dynamic, skillful and imaginative group of individuals for their generous enthusiasm in bringing together a rich mix of qualities, which has made this project enjoyable and possible.
