Topic: New Media Forms of the Book

Crossing Media Boundaries

The book is no longer simply a paper artifact. It is an electronic text read online, on e-readers, on mobile technologies. On these media books are read silently, read out loud, translated, adapted into films or augmented with additional story lines or data files.

Research is needed into what new media forms of the book are relevant in different situations, different cultures and different media ecologies. How does the book as a system for the commodification of ideas and cultural expressions adapt to local social needs?

This research will examine the future of the book in a specific new media environment. Proposals for Masters by Research or PhDs are welcome in this field and they can be practice-led - i.e. creating a book - or by thesis.
