Professor Garry Whannel
Professor Garry Whannel joined the University of Bedfordshire in 1999, and is now an Emeritus Professor.
He is one of the world’s leading experts on the cultural analysis of media sport, and has written extensively on media, culture, leisure and sport for over 40 years.
His major publications include Understanding the Olympics (with John Horne) 3rd edition 2020; The Trojan Horse: the Growth of Commercial Sponsorship (with Deborah Philips) 2013; Culture, Politics and Sport: Blowing the Whistle Revisited 2008; Media Sport Stars, Masculinities, and Moralities 2002; and Fields in Vision: Television Sport and Cultural Transformation 1992. With Andrew Goodwin, he also co-edited the introductory textbook Understanding Television 1990; which is widely used in Media Studies courses.
Current research interests include political humour, food cultures, and popular science.
