New technologies for health and wellbeing

Our world-leading research into innovative technologies for health and wellbeing aim to help people stay healthy and boost life quality, while directly benefitting healthcare professionals with diagnosis and treatment.

Industry, academics, medics, businesses and governments use University of Bedfordshire's research to create new products, fund further research, improve patient care, and deliver innovative services and change policy and practice.

Our researchers work in collaborations with physicians, psychologists, engineers and technologists to design and develop cutting-edge tools that impact organisations and individuals in society.

Specific tools developed by the University’s expert research teams will help identify and treat major serious medical conditions such as brain and lung cancers, heart failure and osteoporosis and support surgical procedures such as stent placement to treat vascular diseases.

Our work into medical visualisation improves the lives of patients and supports healthcare professionals. This includes being  involved in a pioneering future healthcare project with Luton Clinical Care Group (CCG) and our ground-breaking technologies are being distributed through local and national businesses.

Our research into distributed computing and robotics technologies has improved the quality of life for the elderly, making them more independent and confident. This research has also resulted in a roadmap for further research into assisted living.

Research results from the Virtual Physiological Human project, funded by the EU, has enabled the BMI to create links with the biomedical and media departments and IRAC outputs are now used to replace animal tissue experiments.

We highlight future possibilities to our user community through events such as the University’s Knowledge Network Event on ‘Advances in Medical Healthcare Using Computer Visualisation for Professionals’. Through public seminars, we provide an overview of the Visual Physiological Human Initiative and show how research can impact healthcare in the coming years.
