Holly Brown, Media Communications BA Hons

Holly told us how she built up her CV whilst at university and how her course gave her the confidence and passion to work in radio.

How did you get the job and what was the application process like?

I got lucky with the timing for sure! I had completed my course but was still living in student halls when I saw the job advertised on social media. After some encouragement from friends and family, I submitted my CV - happily displaying my newly acquired 1st class degree in Media Communications. I heard back the next day and was asked for a demo, then after an interview the following week, I got the job!

Can you tell us more about new role?

I've only been at the station for 4 months. I compile the hourly news bulletins and read them live. I also conduct interviews in person and over the phone. I talk to people from all walks of life - politicians, young achievers and local celebrities. I also voice pieces for other stations we are connected to - Soleil Radio and Channel 103 in Jersey.

How long has it been since you graduated?

I graduated in July 2022 and was lucky to secure my role soon after.

Are there any aspects of your course or university life that have helped you in your role now?

I remember taking an audio editing unit with Terry Lee - to be honest, I never thought I'd get into radio, but I really enjoyed that unit, so I felt confident I could work with audio editing software and recording equipment afterwards.

I also hosted a show on Radio Lab and clocked up quite a few hours of live presenting - not only was it fun and creative but it allowed me to get over any nerves and it looked pretty good on my CV.

What advice would you give to students who are graduating this year?

My advice would be to take any opportunity you can - be open-minded and build your confidence. Put in that extra bit of effort (even if you're tired) because people do eventually notice your work ethic.
