I am a qualified nurse and midwife and currently practice in both areas to ensure that what is taught in the classroom reflects current practice.

Working closely with practitioners guarantees that healthcare offered to patients and clients is challenged and refined to promote high clinical standards and sound clinical environments in which our students are placed.

Teaching Role

I have been involved in education for many years and have experience in teaching and supporting students across a range of academic levels.  My areas of teaching interest include:

• fetal monitoring
• pre-conception care
• child protection
• midwifery supervision
• the role of the expert witness
• naturalistic research methodologies.

Research Interests

My research interests are sited within a naturalistic paradigm, with my speciality being grounded theory as this enables me to explore care within the clinical setting by interacting and conversing with practitioners.
My research focuses upon:

• Exploration of privacy in care settings, including, gossiping in wards, dignity, confidentiality, ward design and issues relating to bodily privacy.
• Dignity and respect
• Supervision of midwives
• Midwifery Education

• Review of telephone assessments by NHS Direct to mothers with babies less than three months of age, collaborative project with NHSD, 2010
• Implementation of service improvement into pre-registration nursing and midwifery curricula, three year project funded by NHS South Central, 2009
