Operating Department Practice student, Michael Amponsah, shares his student journey…

I am currently in my second year studying Operating Department Practice. I choose this course because I want to further help individuals in their worst times, be a person for them to express their concerns and take responsibility for their care and wellbeing.

Every day is a chance to learn new things and take on new adventures as well as getting to talk to people from various aspects of life both in university and on placement.

I will be applying for a role as an ODP for anaesthetic within hospital theatres since my course is predominantly based around anaesthetics within theatres.

I have been having simulation sessions (SIM Lab) at the University and it’s very helpful for my career path, as it enables me to know what to expect and provides me with both the theoretical and practical aspects of my studies, as well as my future job.

Bedfordshire has allowed me to further mature myself as my studies allow me to see individuals from a different viewpoint and in their most vulnerable times in which I have to step up and take responsibility to help those around me.

Make sure to pick a course which you are interested in and an industry that you are ambitious to be involved in post-graduation and make somewhat of an aim on what to achieve or a plan. Most importantly, have a backup plan as life is eventful and sudden.

If you are hesitant about which university to apply to, look at student ratings, how happy students are with their teaching and modules, as well as the percentage of those going into further studies or into the work sector post-graduation, as well as looking at the support available for students during hard times.
