Hot on the heels of their Community Radio Awards shortlisting, Radio LaB – the University of Bedfordshire’s community radio station – is celebrating another three nominations at the Student Radio Awards (SRAs)

The station is hoping to pick up prizes in the categories of:

  • Best Event Programming
  • Best Chart Show Programming
  • Best Sport Programming

The nod for ‘Best Event Programming’ is in recognition of Radio LaB’s coverage of BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend in Luton, which saw student presenters interviewing a host of music stars live from the festival.

Joel Atkinson, third-year Radio & Audio student, said: “External recognition for our work is an incredible motivator, helping us understand that what we are doing is not just in our own bubble but having a wider impact. The experiences gained through these projects are invaluable and will help those of us looking for work in the media industry.

“My favourite entry was for our coverage of Radio 1's Big Weekend. We utilised the unique access we were given backstage along with production skills we learnt in classes. I want to thank the support of the University, Terry Lee and all involved in Radio LaB.”

Radio LaB are no strangers to picking up accolades in recognition of student work, with the team last winning Silver in the ‘Best Chart Show Programming’ category at the 2022 SRAs.

Terry Lee, Senior Tutor in Radio & Audio and co-ordinator of Radio LaB, added: “We’re incredibly proud that Radio LaB has been shortlisted for three SRAs, which highlights the hard work and creativity of our students. These entries involved some of the best radio content from the last year, from live sports commentaries to interviews with local musicians, truly showcasing the diverse range of skills our students have developed here at the University. Radio LaB provides a unique broadcast platform for them to share the best of Luton with a wider audience.”

The winners will be announced at a special ceremony in London on 19 November. Keep an eye on the University’s social media feeds @uniofbedsnews for updates.
