International student volunteers at community soup kitchen
Mon 20 May, 2024An international postgraduate student from the University of Bedfordshire has been using his spare time to volunteer in Luton at a community soup kitchen.
Currently studying for a Master’s degree in Public Health, Yadwinder Singh helps people in need by assisting the Luton Sikh Soup Kitchen, which operates every Sunday night from outside Luton’s Town Hall.
During his time at the free hot meal pop-up, organised by Luton’s Guru Nanak Gurdwara, Yadwinder has met the High Sheriff of Bedfordshire and made friends with fellow students and members of the local Sikh community.
Launched in 2021 to help eradicate food poverty in the town, Yadwinder says working with the Luton Sikh Soup Kitchen will enrich his soul and his CV, and also enhance his studies by exploring health inequalities among diverse communities.

My name is Yadwinder Singh. After studying for my undergraduate degree in physiotherapy in India, I was keen to pursue a Master’s degree in public health and learn about tackling inequalities. I discovered that the University of Bedfordshire’s MSc Public Health course has a reputation for high-profile researchers who teach on the programme, so I decided to apply for an international course.
I love the MSc Public Health course and I have met lots of other international students, and learned about different parts of the world. The Faculty of Health & Social Sciences is fantastic in providing us with great expertise and offering us internships to gain valuable work experience – for example, some of us have been recently volunteering on an organ donation project which was even featured on the local television news!
I love it! Luton is a cosmopolitan town with people living here from all around the world. I am Sikh and love that the Gurdwara is just a ten minute walk from the University’s Luton campus. The Gurdwara was recently rebuilt and opened by His Majesty King Charles III – one of our course tutors, Professor Gurch Randhawa, even hosted the King during his visit!
When I am not studying, I also volunteer at the Gurdwara’s weekly soup kitchen where we serve hot meals to those in need. I even got to meet the High Sheriff of Bedfordshire, who presented us with a Certificate of Appreciation for our volunteering efforts and I received the certificate on behalf of our volunteers.
There is a lot of studying to do but you have lots of experienced and helpful staff on hand, plus plenty of work experience and internship opportunities to complement your studies. Aside from studying there’s lots to do both on and off campus, including volunteer work and social activities. Check out the Beds SU website for events and student discounts.
