Poppy Majid, who graduated from the Professional Policing course in 2023, shares how she recommends visiting campus for an Open Day

I studied Professional Policing from 2020-2023. I chose this degree because I wanted to join the police force, but I really valued having an in-depth understanding of theories and practices, so I picked the degree to enhance my knowledge before I was ready to join the force.

How supportive the environment is. Whether it’s your friends that you meet or your tutors/lecturers.

In my personal life it has taught me to always trust yourself and to always put yourself first. In my professional life it has taught me the importance of being organised and timely which is crucial specifically in my job role.

I am a Short-Term Caseworker for the East London Rape Crisis. My passion has always been to support and advocate for women and when this opportunity arose I was so grateful to be part of the ending violence against women and girls movement.

My degree prepared me for this role because I work very closely with the police as I support women through the Criminal Justice Process. It provided me with extensive understanding of the correct police procedures that should be followed, alongside legislation which I have to understand and use on a daily basis. My role has also allowed me to use my dissertation to deliver training around violence against women and girls in the night-time economy.

Visit as many open days as possible, if you can see yourself walking around that campus then you know that place is for you! In regard to picking your degree, the best advice I could give is to create a mind map for the next 5 years of your life, what you want to achieve and all the potential careers you would like in the future and then find a degree that is fluent and the skills can be transferred into those careers.
