Elliott Plant, who graduated from the BSc Strength & Conditioning course in 2019, shares his experience beginning his studies as a mature student…

I studied BSc Strength & Conditioning and graduated in 2019. I chose the course as I was looking for something that would help my journey into professional football. I had an interest in strength training at the time but wanted to gain a broader understanding of what goes in to making a successful training program, specifically around the sport of football.  The course was new to the University, and I was excited to be part of the first cohort.

The classes were small, giving me the opportunity to have some beneficial contact time with course lecturers – particularly in a gym setting as part of our course. I would imagine this is not possible at bigger universities given the number of students. Through staying in student accommodation at the University, I was also able to meet and share my time with like-minded people who I remain friends with to this day.

My time at Bedfordshire has aided my professional growth as, without the degree obtained after 3 years’ study, I would not have had the expertise required to be competent in my current role. It gave me a confidence to pursue a career in an industry I was completely unfamiliar to.

For the last seven years, I was employed by Luton Town FC as a first team Strength & Conditioning Coach. The degree gave me the fundamentals of sports science and S&C practices and what would be expected of me moving into a full-time position.

I’ve been fortunate to be a part of three promotions during my time at Luton Town, notably winning a playoff final at Wembley in 2023 to get to the Premier League. The subsequent season was also a highlight, being given the opportunity to work in the most watched league in the world.

I would advise doing as much research as possible before making any decisions. It’s your personal responsibly and you shouldn’t expect people to make such an important decision that will only affect you. I would also advocate for any mature students who are unsure given their age. I can understand if there is doubt due to be older than fellow students, but I wouldn’t be where I am today without jumping in and not worrying about the age gap!
