The University of Bedfordshire’s award-winning community radio station, Radio LaB, has once again opened its doors to local students to help inspire the next generation of aspiring radio DJs and podcasters.

Part of an annual project for Luton Sixth Form College, students studying the Sound Design and Podcasting BTEC, broadcasted their award-winning Takeover Show live over two days.

These were then broadcast live from the Radio LaB studios, based on the University’s Luton campus.

Terry Lee, Senior Tutor in Radio & Audio and co-ordinator of Radio LaB said: “Radio LaB is a platform for young Lutonians to have their voices heard – and we always love hearing what the Luton Sixth Form students have to say! Every year the students prepare excellent content. It’s a real highlight for us, and I’m delighted we can offer them the experience of using our broadcast studios to go live across the town.”

Each year, the University teams up with Luton Sixth Form College to give pupils a chance to air their content to a real audience as part of their assessments. In 2019, the Takeover Show and Radio LaB won an award for ‘Best Outreach Project’ in the I Love Student Radio Awards.

Andy Waterfield, Luton Sixth Form College media teacher, added: “This was so exciting. Once again Radio LaB allowed students from Luton Sixth Form to showcase their talent live on air as well as their amazing production skills and professionalism in a real world setting. It's an amazing vocational experience.”

The University of Bedfordshire offers a number of undergraduate and postgraduate media courses for those looking for a career in the media, including Radio & Audio and Media Production. For more information, visit the School of Arts and Creative Industries.
