A current Masters student at the University of Bedfordshire turned to Clearing after changing her mind about the course she wanted to study.

Up until early October, prospective students can use Clearing to find a place at a different university if they aren’t happy with their exam results, or if they just simply want to study something different or somewhere else.

Yasmin – who graduated with an undergraduate degree in Football Science and is now studying for a research-based Masters degree with the School of Sport Science & Physical Activity – used Clearing to see what other course options she had after receiving her A Level results and changing her mind about her original options. Read all about her journey so far…

My name is Yasmin, I’m 22 from Felixstowe in Suffolk. I’m currently in my 4th year of studying at Bedfordshire. After completing my undergraduate degree in Football Science I decided to begin a Masters by Research in Sport & Physical Activity.

On A Level results day, I reflected on the universities I decided to apply to and I looked at Clearing to see if there were any better options for me.

I called up the University of Bedfordshire’s Clearing line because of the specific course they had which wasn’t available at any other universities. I had called a few universities that day and but the person I spoke to from Bedfordshire was the nicest and most helpful out of them all, which contributed to me choosing to study here. After applying, I had a couple of phone calls from academic staff introducing themselves and offering information about the course and campus which was nice and welcoming.

I’ve received a lot of support while at the University, especially from my undergraduate and Masters supervisors. Unlike a lot of universities, here lecturers know you personally and support you on a one-to-one basis.

I work part-time to support myself financially while studying. It’s predominantly an evening job so it means I can attend university during the day. Additionally, the University of Bedfordshire offers a lot of on-campus jobs for students, such as working as student ambassadors or for the Students’ Union.

Join a sports team or society, even if it’s just socially. I’m the captain of the women’s football team and it’s helped me form friendships with people on different courses and of all different ages.

Also be sure to attend the Welcome Week and Fresher’s events held at the university over the first week to make friends.

Think carefully about what course you want to do and attend open days to look around the campuses. Join relevant Facebook groups and try to interact with other students attending the university prior to starting.
