A current Masters student from the University of Bedfordshire has spoken about how Clearing enabled him – as a mature student – to pursue his dream of one day becoming a published author.

Up until October, prospective students can use Clearing to find a place that suits their needs – and the Clearing hotline isn’t just for those who have received their exam results this summer.

Creative Writing student, Andy, came to study with the University’s School of Arts & Creative Industries after applying through Clearing. Although it was a last minute decision, the ease and reassurance of the Clearing process helped Andy feel confident in his decision to study as a mature student.

Read Andy’s Q&A to find out about his Clearing journey and experience of studying at the University of Bedfordshire…

My name is Andy Walsh and I’m 53-years-old. As a mature student, I completed a BA in Creative Writing at Bedfordshire and graduated with a distinction. I’m now studying for a Masters degree in Creative Writing.

I’ve always loved reading and occasionally tried my hand at writing – I even wrote a novel (but it’s so bad it will never again see the light of day!). I decided, quite late in life, that I enjoyed writing fiction so much that I’d like to make it my job. To do that, I knew I would need to improve my writing skills considerably. I never thought I’d gain the opportunity to study creative writing at university level, especially considering my age, but Bedfordshire didn’t put up any walls and everyone was welcoming right from the start.

I left it quite late to apply, fearing I was dreaming to believe I’d ever get a place at a university, but I saw on Bedfordshire’s website that they were taking applications through Clearing. I had a kind of “it’s now or never!” moment and thought I’d give it a shot. The process was quite straightforward but I was concerned my lack of formal qualifications would mean immediate refusal. Fortunately, my life experience and some professional qualifications contributed to my eligibility. They asked for a sample of my writing too and luckily it was good enough for the tutors to see my potential.

After speaking to the Clearing team, I received a call from the Creative Writing course coordinator, who began running through some of the finer details – the official start date, what we’d be learning, etc. I had to stop them and ask, “I’ve been accepted then?” They said “Yes, of course!” and after that, I heard very little of what they said – I was just so excited that I’d been accepted.

I’ve never looked back. It’s the best thing I ever did.

If you’re applying through Clearing because you left it late to apply due to self-doubt, like me, then stop worrying and just apply. Rest assured, the application process is simple, and you’ll become part of a cohort comprised of people from a range of backgrounds and of differing ages. You won’t just learn – you’re sure to make enduring friendships as well.

The Creative Writing course tutors are highly knowledgeable masters of the writing craft. They understand how to encourage you to write, not just learn to write. Whether it is prose, poetry or script-writing, you’ll be sure to learn from tutors who are passionate about what they do and eager to share what they know.

The School of Arts & Creative Industries at Beds is a thriving community of like-minded creatives. The environment is geared towards learning, creativity and sharing, with newsletters and regular events to showcase talent. You’ll be immersed in a world where you live what you love, and I can guarantee you won’t regret applying.

The University of Bedfordshire’s Clearing team is on hand throughout September to discuss courses, funding, accommodation, student support and any other queries about life on campus.
