A group of budding events managers are curating a public charity event called ‘Cultural Implosion’ to celebrate the University of Bedfordshire’s cultural variety and inclusion.

Taking place on Thursday 1st December between 12pm – 3pm in the Postgraduate and CPD Centre on the Luton campus, the event aims to entertain and educate attendees about the cultural differences of Bedfordshire’s diverse student cohort, with all funds raised during the event donated to local charities.

Events Management students from the University’s Business School came up with the concept for this event during one of their lectures and have been supported by different teams and students from across the University to put this event together as part of a course assessment.

The fun-filled afternoon will feature many diverse activities including music and spoken word, complemented by a selection of cultural dishes for attendees to try. The student organisers hope that the event will also give prospective students in the local community a chance to learn more about the University’s courses, facilities and societies which they can take part in.

Kerene Nkumbo, one of the lead students organising the event, said: “Our ‘Cultural Implosion’ event will be a great opportunity to promote the University’s diversity and inclusivity. The educational part of the event aims to make sure that it will have an impact on how different cultures are seen, respected and impacted.”

Proceeds of the event will go towards chosen charities which support new mothers and families struggling to meet the financial and practical burdens of parenthood, as well as supporting victims of domestic abuse.

Paul Fowler, Unit Lecturer for Events Planning in Practice, has been working with the students to produce this event. He commented: “The class is small in comparison to others I teach at Bedfordshire, but the diversity is the common denominator and the students wanted to build on the profile which the University’s Black History Month celebrations had already established.”

He added: “It might sound corny but it's the rich, eclectic mix of students that come through Bedfordshire’s doors which is why I love working here. It is also clear that many of these students have little or no awareness of Luton’s rich heritage. Many have no idea about Luton’s history of hats, cars and football and that Luton has always been a hotspot for migrant workers, and that should be celebrated more – so hopefully this event will help promote this cultural aspect to current students and members of the public, too.”
