The University of Bedfordshire is set to host a STEM Community Day at its Luton campus to celebrate British Science Week 2022.

On Saturday 12th March between 10am and 2pm, members of the local community are invited to explore the on-site STEM Building and take part in science-based activities, with the aim to inspire young people to be future leaders in the industries of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.

At the event, visitors will be able to meet academic and technical staff, take part in fun and interactive workshops and find out about how they can take the first steps into the world of STEM.

External companies are also getting involved in the day, with Zoolab – an ethical animal encounters organisation – running a series of activities for kids, alongside Starlight STEM, who are running an interactive space and rocket workshop, with participants building and testing their own rockets on the day.

Roisin Kendall, Access & Outreach Manager, spoke about why the University is holding this Community Day.

She said: “This STEM Community Day is a great opportunity for members of our local community to explore and come and see our amazing STEM building and facilities.

“STEM is such an integral part of our lives and will continue to be so in the future. Our overall aim is to inspire the next generation to think about STEM careers and academic pathways.”

British Science Week 2022 is taking place over 10 days between 11th and 20th March with thousands of events running throughout the whole of the UK to celebrate STEM industries, coordinated by the British Science Association and funded by the UK Research & Innovation (UKRI).

The aim of this hands-on Community Day is to expose the next generation of young people to the possibilities of STEM and to encourage them to see what roles they could hold within the sector.

STEM professionals continue to be some of the most highly sought-after workers in the country, with the UK Government announcing a multi-million-pound government package of investment back in 2020 to support the next generation of STEM ‘stars’.

The University’s own state-of-the-art STEM Building opened at the Luton campus in September 2019 following a £180million redevelopment of its campus facilities.
