University of Bedfordshire graduate and BBC Radio 1 DJ Melvin Odoom is to host the next instalment of the University’s popular ‘An Evening With’ public lecture series, shining a light on his stellar career.

Melvin, who graduated from the University in 2001 with a degree in Media Performance and Radio, burst onto TV screens just a year later as part of the Dick and Dom In Da Bungalow cast, before moving onto present TV and radio shows across Kiss, MTV, BBC, ITV and Channel 4.

The University is delighted to welcome Melvin back to Bedfordshire. A student panel led by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Rebecca Bunting, will pose questions to Melvin about his life and career, from winning the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special to presenting live from the BRIT Awards red carpet.

In line with the University’s commitment to sharing expertise and knowledge, the event is free to attend by registering through Eventbrite. Attendees are able to submit a question for the panel to ask Melvin as part of the registration form. The event will take place virtually, with registered individuals sent a joining link ahead of the event.

Rickie and Melvin graduationsMelvin commented: “I am super excited to be spending the evening with the University, the place where my career in the media began. Bedfordshire still holds a place in my heart and I’m looking forward to talking to the new Vice Chancellor and the audience about my journey from studies to studio.

“I’m sure there are lots of students at the University who are interested in getting into media, TV and radio, just like I was, and I can’t wait to share my experiences with them – the great people I’ve met, shows I’ve worked on and places my job has taken me. I hope this event will help to inform and inspire the future generation of Bedfordshire graduates.”

Melvin currently hosts the coveted Live Lounge slot from 10:30 – 13:00 on BBC Radio 1 alongside Rickie Haywood-Williams a fellow Bedfordshire alumni, and Charlie Hedges. He also co-presents Got What It Takes on CBBC with Anna Maynard.

With Melvin holding such exciting and prominent positions in his career, the evening is bound to be of great interest to anybody curious about the media and entertainment industries and those interested in pursuing a career in TV and radio.

Professor Rebecca Bunting, who will lead the Q&A session during the event, commented: “Having Melvin back at the University for an event such as this one is something we are extremely excited about. Melvin is a wonderful example of what Bedfordshire students can go onto achieve and it will be fascinating to hear from him about his journey to becoming a presenter and personality popular across the nation.

“I am certain the stories he has to tell will be a source of inspiration to those currently studying here and I encourage anybody with an interest in Melvin and the media to take advantage of this special evening.”
