In an exhibition titled ‘Flow’, postgraduate students from the University of Bedfordshire will demonstrate how they take their artwork from concept to reality at one of the county’s premier art venues – The Hat Factory.

Running for eleven days between the 1st and 11th March 2022, the show will display a number of ‘Work In Progress’ pieces from students currently on the University’s MA Art & Design course, which will give the audience an insight into the ‘flow’ of their creative processes.

The exhibition will have a free official opening event on Thursday 3rd March from 5pm, to coincide with the 14th birthday celebrations of The Culture Trust – the charity which manages a number of cultural venues across Luton, including The Hat Factory.

Dr Janet Emmanuel, Principal Lecturer & Postgraduate Portfolio Leader, is excited to see the works on display. She said:

“This exhibition is unique as the student artists are offering the viewer an opportunity to see how their artwork has been developed from the beginning. To see how the creative process works is an insightful experience and can offer perspective, as well as encouraging the viewers to take part, offer suggestions and even become involved in making art themselves.

“Working with the Culture Trust will give the artists an understanding of the deeper values of local galleries and spaces, and allow them to connect with collectors, gallerists and employers in the area.”

Dr Carlota Larrea, Head of the School of Arts & Creative Industries, added: “As we return to normality after the disruption of the Covid-19 pandemic, we are all keen to revive and enjoy being together again – staff, students and the creative community. Opportunities to work alongside and within Luton’s Cultural Quarter, to help animate the area, are wonderful – and very much enjoyed by our students. For them to exhibit their show, and to collaborate with other creatives is such a great opportunity and a worthy addition to their CV.”

Students participating in ‘Flow’ boast a variety of art specialisms, including photography, 3D animation, interior architecture, fashion design and textiles.

Sarah’s work is influenced by her favourite artists, Antoni Tapies and Kurt Schwitters. Due to this she has recently been “driven to abstraction”, creating mixed media assemblage work. Her work is concerned with the recording of events, duration and the metaphysical depiction of the passage of time. The images produced are an embodiment of personal experience and the celebration of the here and now.

Sarah initially studied Home Economics at Leeds Polytechnic in the 1980s and studied Photographic Arts at the University of Westminster as a mature student in 2003. Over the past two decades Sarah has exhibited internationally including solo shows in Galleria Galera (Granada, Spain) and LIQUID SEDUCTION (Chatham and London). Sarah was selected for International group exhibitions including Expocition 2013 (Porto) and The Association of Photographers Gallery, FILM on FILM (London), the Deptford X festival 2005 and Margate Photofest (2012). More recently, Sarah’s practice has moved away from photography and now encompasses a wide range of mediums including sculpture, abstract and mixed media art.

Muhammed is an artist and designer with a background in Animation and Sculpture. His work is primarily based in technology because he enjoys how this form gives the illusion of an unreal world and allows anyone to be a part of it. He defines himself as an animator who also enjoys hands on art such as drawing and painting. His ambition as an artist is to be constantly evolving, as art and technology also change.

Muhammed holds a degree in Multimedia and Communication, a Postgraduate Diploma in Animation and great knowledge of fine art. His painting “Homeless man” was featured in “Evening of Life,” Art Exhibition June 2018 at Government Fine Art Gallery in Kerala, India.

Jakub’s artistic practice is an ongoing inquiry into creation of immersive aesthetic experiences. Starting from early experiments in night-time urban photography executed on an old Soviet camera, his motivation was to evoke certain moods and feelings. He uses found objects and artefacts and mid-century (often retrofitted) equipment and techniques, as well as ‘mundane goods’ – everyday items found in DIY stores and thrift shops.

Jakub is a Polish-British visual artist, experimental composer and an arts activist based in Luton. Hailing from city of Wroclaw, his early practice centred on industrial/urban photography and street art, gradually expanding into moving image, print-making and art-action since his relocation to the UK in 2006. He holds the role of the Creative Representative on Luton Borough Council’s Arts & Culture Strategy Group.

Jainy is an artist and designer with a degree in Fashion Technology who is passionate about creating meaningful designs and artistic statements. She has always wanted to be a designer from a young age and pursuing her dream as a reality is her ultimate aim. Fashion is her way to communicate with the world – through her exploration of new trends, artistic methods and ideas from around the world she hopes to inspire societal change. Her ambition is to be a fashion illustrator for luxury brands like Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Dior and Prada.

Jainy was born in Kuwait and resides between Kerala in India and the UK. She has designed and produced fashion collections such as “Miss Peregrines Home for Peculiar Children” in 2020 and was a model for ‘Fashion Meets Culture’ in 2018 in India, and choreographer for ‘Fashion Meets Culture’ in 2019.

Through her work, Diana tries to bring the outside in through close observation and engagement with nature. Her goal is to inspire those to look more carefully at the world around them, to discover beauty in unusual places.

Diana is a passionate Designer and Artist with a degree in Interior Architecture and Design. She takes great interest in a sustainable future while creating incomparable experiences through the use of sensory senses.

As a textile artist, Deborah uses the combination of quilting and embroidery with technological interactions to develop pieces that have another dimension and life. Previously a nurse, she worked with traveller and Roma families and witnessed discrimination and segregation of their community, and how it is still socially acceptable to denigrate this cultural way of life.

Textiles have been important to Deborah from a young age, being taught to knit and crochet by her mother and grandmother. She retired from nursing at the beginning of 2020 and decided to explore her textile art skills.

Aneta is an Interior Designer and artist, interested in the essence of ‘Bauhaus’ and, in particular, the history of Chair Design. Using knowledge gained by the ‘play’ of materials, in conjunction with historical contexts, Aneta is revisiting and re-designing notions of ‘the Chair’.

She is an interior designer and artist, with a Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design and is currently working towards a MA in Art & Design. Aneta’s creative interests are concerned with the philosophy of colour and light and space and she loves experimenting with form, space and materials to create new ideas and concepts, revealing aspects of herself through her work.

Kasora is a fashion designer interested in the issues of sustainability – how the fashion industry uses materials, how they may be re-used and re-developed. Her work contains elements of personal cultural memory from her experiences as a Black woman born in Namibia who lives, works and is raising her family in the UK. Kasora uses old Herero/ Himba traditional attire as a starting point and has an interest in taking inspiration from the silhouette to create unique pieces.

She has a first-class degree in Fashion Design and is studying her MA in Art and Design at Bedfordshire, concentrating on clothing sustainability issues and the reuse and re-addressing of discarded material – in particular leather offcuts, in combination with discarded key garments such as jackets. Kasora is interested in developing beautiful key pieces for people’s wardrobes that become precious heirlooms and a legacy of culture and world experiences, rather than being thrown away.

Jenny is a makeup artist and educationalist with over 25 years of experience working with photographers, editors, models and students in the beauty industry.

She is inspired by natural forms, colours and patterns found in nature. Using a biomorphic approach she considers issues of sustainability, reuse and redevelopment of the throw away ephemera and materials used in packaging, noting their potential in their form, colour and pattern.

She considers the potential of these often discarded things, developing new combinations of colour, material, object and structure for reflective and considered trend analysis and forecasting in the beauty industry.

This is the latest in a regular run of exhibitions involving Bedfordshire students, all in partnership with The Hat Factory – the most recent being Pertinacity and Luton: Brimming with History.

Sam Javid, Creative Director of the Culture Trust, believes Flow is demonstrative of the region’s creative talent. He said:

“The creative energy in Luton is exceptional. Working closely with the University of Bedfordshire means we can spot and support new artistic talent and help students reach the audience they deserve. I’m also excited that this event features as part of our 14th birthday celebrations in the Hat District, meaning we can shout about and celebrate this exhibition with old and new friends.”

A programme of workshops and activities are planned to accompany the exhibition, including artist talks and a Q&A where audiences can interact with the artists and discuss their work. Visit www.culturetrust.com for more information.
