University’s Fantastic Noise podcast returns for series three
Tue 15 September, 2020A podcast created in-house by a lecturer at University of Bedfordshire has returned for its highly anticipated third series.
Fantastic Noise – created by Senior Tutor in Radio and Audio, Terry Lee – is the go-to podcast for budding broadcasters and those interested in gaining an insight into the ever-expanding world of all things audio.
The podcast, which launched in 2018, is designed to give students a chance to hear from industry experts on a range of topics, as well as making concepts and ideas accessible by busting jargon and exploring what good audio sounds like.
Terry is also coordinator of the University of Bedfordshire’s award-winning community radio station Radio LaB, based at the Luton campus. In every Fantastic Noise episode, he sits down with an industry insider to discuss aspects of audio including production, editing and presenting, with the aim of passing on practical advice and guidance to the next generation of broadcasters.
Previous episodes have featured guests from BBC radio, TalkSport and Radio X to name but a few.
Ahead of the launch of series three of Fantastic Noise, Terry said: “Since 2018, these podcasts have been a really useful way to give our students industry expertise and insight, direct to their ears.
“In this new series of Fantastic Noise we are focusing on specific themes and topics that my students regularly bring up with me.”
Available from 15th September, the first episode of series three sees Terry talk to popular YouTuber and CBeebies host Maddie Moate. In this episode, Maddie discusses Maddie’s Sound Explorers, her new children’s education podcast which she hosts and produces, and talks to Terry about how podcasting platforms can be a flexible home for independent content creators.
Other episodes in the upcoming series will see the BBC’s Dan Maudsley talking about his award-winning true crime podcast ‘Paradise’, as well as an episode devoted to social media for radio organisations and a discussion with Sky News Radio’s Annie Joyce and Kiran Bhangal.
Terry said: “The professional radio and audio people I speak with are always so generous with their time and have great advice for those looking to made radio or podcasts.
“These episodes have also been a great way for me to keep on top of industry trends, so I can ensure our students are being taught with up-to-date information and industry standard techniques.”
Fantastic Noise has been well-received by students and industry sources alike, being shortlisted last year in the category of ‘Best Podcast’ at the Community Radio Awards.
Back in Feb (remember then?), we hosted a #BedsTalks event (you can tell this was a while ago...) @uniofbeds about #makingradiodrama feat @BBCTheArchers Editor Jeremy Howe, & @TheOffensivePOD's @adamjarrell.
