The University’s academics and students from the world of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) will be taking over the Central Mall space for one day only, where shoppers, families and passers-by will be able to take part in some hands on activity and get inspired by science and engineering.

People will be able to take part in virtual reality demonstrations, as well making DNA bracelets and getting up close and personal with a variety of scientific curios and robots. Other activities include a Batak reaction challenge, a fingerprint scanner and 3D internal image exploration.

The University’s Festival of Science & Engineering coincides with the annual British Science Week, and aims to celebrate the University’s new STEM building which opened in September 2019. The series of free activities and talks is an opportunity for local people to find out about the amazing new facilities right on their doorstep.

Other events taking place at the University during the Festival include a free lecture on Artificial Intelligence & Our Future, and a schools day where 280 children from local schools will get a chance to spend a day in the new STEM building, experiencing a day in the life of a university STEM student.

The week rounds off with a celebratory lunchtime lecture for staff and students in the SU Bar discussing the latest research on the psychology of food – all over a pint and a pizza.
