Toby Pope (writer, editor, and performer) and Chloe Slocombe (producer and production manager) have been recognised for their sketch comedy ‘The Incomplete Guide to Everything’. 

The pair studied the BA Television Production course in the School of Culture and Communications and both graduated from Bedfordshire with first class honours degrees in July 2019.

Toby said of the students’ nomination: “It feels incredible to be nominated in the Royal Television Society Awards. We took a risk making a comedy piece but we are extremely happy that other people have enjoyed watching it as much as we enjoyed making it.

“I want to work in comedy television in the future and I believe having even been nominated for these awards will look great to potential employers, and I hope this is just the start of much more to come.” 

‘The Incomplete Guide to Everything’ was inspired by the likes of Charlie Brooker’s ‘Screen Wipe’ and Chris Morris’ ‘Brass Eye’.

The two-part programme addressed two of humanity’s “main obsessions”, as explained by the show’s creators, War (episode 1) and Sex (episode 2). 

The sketch show was made as part of their BA Television Production special project unit in their final year of study.

Toby has been nominated for the ‘Craft Skills: Editing’ award, and both Toby and Chloe are joint nominees in the ‘Comedy and Entertainment’ category. 

Anthony Greenbank, Senior Lecturer in TV Production in Faculty of Creative Arts, Technologies & Science, was the students’ project supervisor. He said: “Toby and Chloe worked very hard on this project and to gain two RTS nominations is incredible. 

“What makes it even more impressive is that they took on one of toughest genres to pull off: comedy. 

“When comedy projects go wrong, they can be painful to watch! But in this case Toby and Chloe have created a genuinely funny piece of television and I’m really pleased that the Royal Television Society has recognised their talents.”

Toby, Chloe and Anthony will attend the Royal Television Society East Students Awards on Wednesday 4 March 2020 at The Assembly Rooms in Norwich.

Update: The University is delighted to announce that, on the night, Toby Pope was hugely successful in his category and took home the award for ‘Craft Skills: Editing’ at the Royal Television Society East Student Awards 2020. Congratulations Toby!
