The Student Support team at the University of Bedfordshire are highlighting volunteering opportunities with local charities and community projects that students can get involved with, to help others this Christmas.

Winter can be the most difficult of seasons for those in need and certain aspects of this have only been compounded by the coronavirus pandemic.

For that reason, students who are looking to ‘give back’ or thinking about getting involved in charity work over the holidays are being pointed towards local organisations which are making a positive difference in Luton, Bedford and the surrounding communities. Volunteering is a fantastic opportunity any time of year but it may appeal to those who will be staying in Bedfordshire over the winter break following travel and social restrictions of the pandemic. Volunteering gives students the chance to meet people and get involved in something special whilst away from home.

Some of the local charities which students are being encouraged to help include King’s Arms Project, Bedford Kindness, Luton Food Bank, Luton Salvation Army and Luton NOAH. These charities provide food and support for the homeless, the disadvantaged and the vulnerable, and are all operating throughout December so are in vital need of volunteers.

Katie Ross, Student Engagement Advisor, believes volunteering allows students to feel a part of their community. She said:

We’re encouraging students to get involved in projects such as these because volunteering is a great way to get to know your community and meet new friends. It may even help you discover a new passion or interest.

Volunteering and giving back to the University’s local area helps students feel more part of the community and to learn more about where they are living. Christmas is a time of kindness and giving, and many charities need a little extra help during the festivities. This need is particularly prevalent this year because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

We've Got YouWhile encouraging students to volunteer in their communities, Student Support are also reminding students that they are one of the services available to all students over the Christmas break. This was recently highlighted by Beds SU’s recently launched ‘We’ve Got You’ campaign.

Regarding student care, Katie continued:

We want to reassure student that the university is here for you over the holidays. Talk to somebody and please do not suffer in silence - please call 01234 400 400 if you need support.

We’d also like to ask students to check on each other to ensure their friends and classmates are getting on alright.

Another support service available throughout the Christmas holidays is the Faith Support and Service. The faith and chaplaincy team will be on hand to listen, provide food vouchers and offer help to those who need it.
