The University of Bedfordshire’s award-winning community radio station, Radio LaB, has had its FM broadcasting license extended for a further five years.

Ofcom, the regulatory body for broadcasting, granted the extension which allows Radio LaB to continue broadcasting to the local community in Luton on FM radio from 9th April 2020.

Senior Radio & Audio Tutor and Radio LaB Coordinator, Terry Lee said:

Radio LaB has been a regular fixture on Luton’s FM airwaves for 10 years now, so I am delighted Ofcom have awarded us an extension that will see us on 97.1fm until 2025. Recent events have served as a reminder of how important the radio medium can be – offering a friendly voice, a platform to share views and a place to hear local stories. Radio LaB is not only something to listen to, but a place where new broadcasters can learn their craft, gain transferable communication and organisation skills and ultimately make positive changes in their life.

The extension to 2025 will also mark Radio LaB’s 15th year on air, having began broadcasting in April 2010.

The station, which features programmes produced and hosted by students and local community members, recently won a Community Radio Award in the category of Speech and Journalism.

The station’s FM license extension means more aspiring student and community broadcasters will have to the chance to learn the ropes and develop their skills.

You can listen to Radio LaB in Luton on 97.1fm and online at https://radiolab.beds.ac.uk/ where you can also find out how to get involved with the station.
