Radio LaB shortlisted for national student radio award
Mon 19 March, 2018A campaign by the University of Bedfordshire’s community radio station Radio LaB to encourage more young Lutonians to give blood has been shortlisted for a national student radio award.
A broadcast by students Jack Wilson and Chloe Head has been shortlisted for the Best Outreach Project award at the I Love Student Radio Awards.
Jack and Chloe attended a campaign launch at the Luton Blood Donor Centre on St George’s Square, which aims at encourage more young people in Luton to give blood.
Jack went one step further by making a blood donation during the show so potential donors could see how easy it is - listen to the programme here.
Final year Journalism student Jack said: “It is an honour that a project I oversaw has been shortlisted for an award. We didn’t make the programme to win awards, it was to raise awareness. However, this recognition is great for Radio LaB and also a fantastic way to finish off my degree.”
Final year Media Production student Chloe said: “The blood programme being shortlisted for an award is a great achievement for Radio LaB. As student managers we are keen to make the station the best it can be, being at a national awards ceremony is a real bonus. The blood programme allowed me to practise my interviewing skills with people who do important jobs – something I really enjoyed doing.”
Radio LaB Coordinator Terry Lee said: “We are always looking for positive projects to for Radio LaB to get involved in, and raising awareness about blood donation is a fantastically worthy cause. The students involved have learnt so much; the importance of the work at the Luton Blood Donor Centre, planning radio projects and understanding the power of broadcast media. They deserve all the praise they get.”
Jack and Chloe will find out if they have won at the National Student Radio Conference on Wednesday 4 April.
