University backs national engineering campaign
Mon 15 January, 2018The University of Bedfordshire has welcomed The Year of Engineering, a national campaign launched this week (15-19 Jan) to inspire the next generation of engineers.
The year-long campaign will see Government and industry join forces to inspire future engineers and widen the pool of young people who join the profession.
Bedfordshire’s Vice Chancellor Bill Rammell said: “There has never been a better time to study engineering which is why the University of Bedfordshire is investing £40m in an exciting new Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths building due to open in 2019.
“This new STEM building is part of the University’s wider vision for high-level skills growth in Luton and Bedfordshire and will support the ambitions of regional policymakers to enhance the skills base in the county, extending opportunity for local residents and attracting investment to the region.”
The building will provide over 6000m2 of new teaching space focused on STEM subjects and will allow the University to recruit an extra 600 students in those areas.
New subjects coming on board this year are BEng Mechanical Engineering*, BEng Automotive Engineering* and BSc Quantity Surveying and Value Engineering, with more to follow.

The new building will enable academic staff to carry out world –leading research using state-of-the-art equipment and laboratories. There will be workshops and robotics labs for the delivery of new courses and to support current engineering courses.
The STEM building will also include an outreach space to promote STEM to local schools and provide a platform for STEM engagement with the wider community.
