The University of Bedfordshire celebrated the opening of its new nursing simulation suite at the Luton campus yesterday (Thurs 25 Jan).

The simulation suite is designed to replicate a general hospital ward, and includes an operating theatre, pre-op, post-op and critical care areas, as well as neo-natal facilities.

Visitors had the chance to see the facilities in action as Healthcare Practice students got to grips with the industry-standard equipment.

At the opening ceremony, Bedfordshire Vice Chancellor Bill Rammell said: “This suite represents the next step on our journey to ensuring our students enjoy the best possible learning experience in the best possible environment.

“I believe healthcare education needs to be a major priority for the future. It is only with an efficient system of both attracting and training high quality healthcare professionals, that the health service will break out of the vicious cycle of staffing shortages and ever-mounting pressure.”

The suite will give Nursing, Midwifery, Paramedic Science and Operating Department Practice students an authentic environment where they can develop the skills, alongside classroom and work placement settings.

Dr Sally Bentley, Executive Dean of Education & Sport and Health & Social Sciences, said: “We are delighted to open these fantastic new facilities to our students and I’m looking forward to seeing them make the most of them as they prepare for their future careers as nurses and midwives.”
