Radio LaB celebrates 20th birthday
Mon 27 November, 2017Students and staff from the University of Bedfordshire’s community radio station Radio LaB came together to celebrate the station’s 20th birthday.
Staff and students past and present gathered at the Luton campus to celebrate the creation of the station, formerly known as Luton FM, in 1997.
Since then, the station has been a platform for hundreds of students to learn the tricks of the trade, create their own shows and find out what it’s really like to work in radio.
Many of Radio LaB’s alumni has gone on to have successful careers of their own in radio and TV, including KISS FM presenters Melvin Odoom and Rickie Heywood-Williams, ITV News presenter Becky Jago and BBC Three Counties Radio Broadcast Journalist Toby Friedner.
Toby was one of station’s first managers back in 1997 when he was a student at Bedfordshire. Speaking about his experience, he said: “The feeling of running our own radio station was amazing – that experience really stood us in good stead.”
Radio LaB Coordinator Terry Lee said: “For 20 years, Bedfordshire has been a leader in combining radio theory with broadcast practice thanks to Dr Janey Gordon applying for a broadcast licence in 1997. I personally feel privileged to be a part of rich radio history of our establishment. It was fantastic to celebrate alongside students, staff and alumni.”
