TV Production students from the University of Bedfordshire were able to make links with key players in the TV industry at an exclusive networking event.

The students, studying TV Production, Broadcast TV & Radio, Media Production and Digital Film Technologies & Production, met with executive producers, heads of production, production managers and talent managers from the industry at BAFTA 195 Piccadilly in London.

The event was a chance for the students to get access to people they might not normally meet , find out about work opportunities and work experience placements, and get career advice from experts in their field.

The guests included Bedfordshire alumnus Ram Tripathi, who graduated from the TV Production course in 2011 – he is now a Colourist for Netflix and the BBC.

TV Production student Holly Ferrier said: “I found the BAFTA event very enjoyable. It was a great opportunity to gain information from professionals in the industry and get an insight into the real world of television. The event featured some great, interesting people and I had a good time, hopefully with some experience lined up.”

TV Production student Marta Jakobczyk said: “For me, it was first networking event in my life. People working in television industry were there just for us and it was very exciting experience.”

The University’s Course Coordinator for TV Production Kathryn Wolfe said: “This was the first time we have held a small and focussed employability event at BAFTA and it was a great success. It was very pleasing to see students really networking and holding in-depth conversations with VIPs from the TV industry. I am confident that it will result in increased employability for students as real job possibilities were being discussed at the event.”

The University’s Head of the School of Culture & Communications Dr Carlota Larrea said: “Our annual TV Production networking event is one of the highlights of the year. It gives students the opportunity to mingle with industry people and get information and advice about jobs, skills, contacts. Networking is essential in the media.

“A more intimate event than those in previous years, with a more selective guest list including talent managers, producers, directors and heads of development from companies such as ITV, Princess Production, and Sundog Pictures, gave the students the chance to have more substantial conversations and exchanges which hopefully will lead to opportunities for current students and graduates.”
