The University of Bedfordshire’s leading expert on diversity in public health told a national kidney conference that more needs to be done to make minority groups aware of the dangers of kidney disease.

Prof Gurch Randhawa, Director of the University’s Institute of Health Research (IHR), gave the keynote address at the annual British Renal Society Conference in Nottingham today (Thurs 27 April).

Prof Randhawa presented findings that reveal patients from black, Asian, and minority ethnic (BAME) groups are more likely to suffer from kidney-related health issues compared to white patients.

People from BAME backgrounds are five times more likely to experience kidney failure than other groups. This results in greater demand for dialysis and kidney transplantation.

“This situation will only worsen as the relatively young BAME communities in this country begin to age. It is imperative that community engagement among these communities becomes a priority so those from BAME backgrounds are made aware of kidney disease and can take positive steps to prevent it,” said Prof Randhawa.

Prof Randhawa also presented examples of effective community engagement, saying: “It is fantastic to see our research findings being put into practice, with the community engagement activity being undertaken by the Kidney Research UK-led Peer Educators.

“It has also been a privilege to lead on the development of the UK Faith and Organ Donation Action Plan which has community engagement as an integral component of the Plan.”

The conference is the largest gathering of kidney health professionals, policy makers and academics in the UK, where delegates share best practice of kidney disease prevention, management and treatment.
