English-based courses within the University of Bedfordshire's Education & Sport faculty have been ranked number one in the country, climbing 24 places in the rankings in the recent National Student Survey (NSS).

The survey revealed that students studying within the faculty at the Bedford campus are some of the most satisfied in the country, with several courses scoring 100% for overall student satisfaction and more than half scoring in the 90s.

Executive Dean of the Faculty of Education and Sport Dr Sally Bentley: “We are absolutely delighted to see such high scores once again across our courses. As a Faculty we all work hard to make sure we give our students the very best experience we can, and every year since 2012 has seen a rise in our results.  Academic staff are proud that the students have really enjoyed and benefitted from their time with us.

“Almost every area of the survey has shown that the faculty has made substantial improvements over the last few years, which will only drive us on to continue improving.  We look forward to showing potential students round the lovely Bedford campus where the faculty’s courses are based and which has benefitted from a £23million investment in the last few years - including superb sport facilities and a brand new teaching building.”

Overall satisfaction ratings in Education & Sport have increased by 16% since 2012. Teaching and Assessment & Feedback areas have also seen great improvement, increasing by 12% and 20% respectively.  The faculty is securely in the top quarter for all key indicators of the student experience: Teaching, Assessment & Feedback, Academic Support, Personal Development and Organisation & Management.

Final year students studying Education showed they valued the 115 years of experience the University has in education and PE with 100% overall satisfaction for Education Studies, Applied Education Studies, Physical Education (Secondary QTS) and English Language Studies with TEFL.

In addition, teaching assistants praised the Applied Education Studies course for the quality of its teaching, scoring an impressive 100% across all five teaching-related questions in the survey.

English Language (with a TEFL pathway) was a top course with results between 90% and 100% on every one of the 28 questions with more than half the questions scoring 100%.  This adds to the faculty’s success in the Complete University Guide where it was ranked sixth in the country (2016).

Many courses were praised for the learning resources they provided for students, particularly in Education and PE with Primary Education (with QTS), Sport Science & Coaching, Education Studies, Early Years Education, Sport & Physical Education and Childhood & Youth Studies all scoring over 90%.

The faculty also excelled in Personal Development.  Across both Education and Sport our students rated their personal development at over 90% (Primary Education with QTS, Applied Education Studies, Education Studies, Childhood & Youth Studies and Physical Education leading to QTS, English Language (with TEFL), Football Studies, Sport & Physical Education).

The NSS asks final year undergraduates to provide honest feedback on what it has been like to study at their institution.  It covers a huge range of questions from the quality of teaching to learning resources to student’s personal development.

In all 2,070 final year students from Bedfordshire completed the survey, a response rate of 80%, with 84% of final year students saying they were satisfied with their time spent at the University. The figure means the University of Bedfordshire is now a top 20 university for improving the student experience.
