Readying teachers for the workplace
Thu 18 June, 2015University of Bedfordshire students set to graduate with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) were given guidance on how to make the transition into professional teaching at a conference this month (June 5).
Attending the ITT (Initial Teacher Training) to NQT (Newly Qualified Teacher) Transition Event – held at the new teaching and learning building at the Bedford campus – were over 100 budding teachers, all of whom will make the leap into the workplace after graduating this year.
The key element of the afternoon was a talk from Sue Hugo of Worklife Support, who advised students on how to ‘Survive and Thrive’ during their NQT year – their first year in teaching.
Sue gave tips on how to balance work and life, and on recognising and avoiding the signs of stress.
Supply teacher agency Simply Education was also in attendance – alongside the University’s Careers and Employability Service – informing students on how to make the most of their degrees and secure employment after leaving Bedfordshire.
The soon-to-be graduates departed with goody bags including a memory stick loaded with resources and tips to carry into their first year in teaching. Students studying Primary Education courses could also register for a free pack, which included books, stationery and teaching resources.
Head of Teacher Education at the University, Juliet Fern, said:
“The event was organised by our NQT Co-ordinator Kate Hudson and was a huge success.
“We have many events throughout the year to support our newly qualified teachers. We work with school and Local Authorities in partnership to provide advice and guidance in this important first year into the profession.”
Such was the positivity surrounding the event – 100% of attending students said the event was useful – further conferences are in the pipeline.
