College students take over Radio LaB
Thu 11 June, 2015Students from Luton Sixth Form College are taking over Radio LaB, the University of Bedfordshire’s community radio station.
For two weeks only, 15 to 26 June, from 8am to 3pm (week days only) the sixth form students will get the opportunity to broadcast across the University and the local area with content they have produced themselves.
Running for the third year, the students taking part in the ‘Schools Takeover’ project will be given the teaching and direction to use audio recorders, audio editing software and also the necessary training to interview a variety of people with the right questions and manner.
Terry Lee, Radio LaB’s Station Co-ordinator said: “Radio LaB is committed to offering local young people opportunities to access our facilities. With this partnership we’re not just offering air time, but opportunities for the students to grow confidence, improve communication skills, and make themselves more employable.
“I’m sure our listeners will enjoy the Luton Sixth Form College Students’ programming too, they always make fantastic, original radio.”
Andy Waterfield, radio teacher at the college said: “It’s a fantastic experience for college students to get an insight into the world of live, daily broadcasting. I’m really looking forward to it and I can’t thank the University of Bedfordshire and Terry Lee enough for giving over RadioLaB’s airwaves for two weeks.
“A number of students from previous years’ ‘Takeovers’ still have shows on RadioLaB 97.1FM which proves what an excellent opportunity it is. For the students, it is tremendous achievement to take on a fortnight of daily programmes, live, with such amazing confidence and technical skill.”
Radio LaB 97.1FM is a community radio station that broadcasts throughout Luton and Bedfordshire from the University of Bedfordshire’s Luton campus centre.
The station obtained a community licence in 2010 and since then has been keen to showcase local talent and culture.
You can listen to the Luton Sixth Form College students on 97.1FM every week day between 8am and 3pm, 15 to 26 June.
