An event held by the University of Bedfordshire this month (July 2) focused on the skills needed for mentors to help trainee teachers make the transition into teaching.

Dubbed the Mentor Development Day, the conference demonstrated the skills and requirements needed to support trainee teachers on school placements.

A mentor is a member of school staff who supervises and assesses students whilst they are completing school placements, guiding students to develop as teachers.

Over 80 mentors of all levels of experience attended the event, which consisted of lectures, workshops and networking sessions.

Morning activities saw new mentors divided by age phase (Primary, Secondary, Early Years, Post Compulsory Education) before experienced mentors joined for a networking lunch.

The afternoon contained a range of talks by teaching professionals from local schools. Lectures mainly discussed the role of mentors, supporting trainees and how mentoring can develop teaching practice.

The group was then split for one final workshop on developing observation skills, featuring further contributions from partner schools and trainees.

Attendees departed the event with a copy of the University Placement Handbook, as well as copies of Partnership News.

Head of Teacher Education at the University, Juliet Fern, said:

“We have many events throughout the year to support our new and experienced mentors. Mentors play an important role in developing the skills and knowledge of our trainee teachers. Trainees regularly comment on the positive impact mentors have made on their teaching.”

On the same day, Newly Qualified Teachers (NQTs) enjoyed a celebration of completing their first year in teaching.
