Using 3D imaging technology to resolve safety issues for Morrison Utility Services.

3D technology is brilliant. However, beyond cinema, and certain modelling functions, it hasn't be utilised in any significant way. What if there was a way that the technology could be applied to fields other than entertainment. That's exactly what Morrison Utility Services are looking to do in partnership with the University of Bedfordshire.

Morrison Utility Services maintain the utility network infrastructure, including electricity, water, telecommunication, and gas pipes, with safety being the number one priority. On some protracted works, regular images and measurements for works need to be taken to help planning. This normally means sending somebody on potentially dangerous sites to take the required images and get the distance measurements they need.

To mitigate the risk, Morrison Utility Services approached the University of Bedfordshire with their issue. Currently, feasibility studies are being undertaken that would look to derive critical distance measurements using an image alone. This would significantly reduce the risk to employees and still get the critical measurements required.
