The winner of last year's The Voice, Jermain Jackman, was among a line-up of top guests being interviewed for a live show put on by University of Bedfordshire TV students.

The 20-year-old, who shot to fame after winning the hit BBC show under the guidance of will.i.am, was at the University's HD TV studios as part of a day of filming by 24 first year TV students and 18 second year Media Performance students.

The TV undergraduates were provided with the chance to take on 144 different roles required to produce six interviews as they streamed the event live onto the internet.

The Media Performance students managed to secure a vast line-up of guests for the day including film director Terry McMahon, who played a role in Batman Begins, and Richard Vranch a comedian, actor and musician.

The stand-out interviewee of the day was the winner of the third series of The Voice, Jermain, who told his three interviewers (Duayne Boachie, Shani Alleyne and David Hanson) about his rise in the industry, his time on The Voice, and his future plans which include political ambitions.

"Growing up I always loved music. I was singing Whitney Houston songs all day. I learnt the piano and after a while many opportunities were coming my way so I wanted to pursue it," Jermain said.

"Being on The Voice was a lot of pressure and hard work.

"Having will.i.am as a mentor though opened my mind to different genres and where a song can go. I discovered you can change the foundation of a song and therefore change its content.

"To win was surreal. It didn't sink in for a few days."

Jermain has an album out on 23 March, however he said he is not just concentrating solely on music.

"There's a lot of sides of me. I love politics and was recently in Scotland with Gordon Brown for the referendum. I want to mix music and politics. Many people say you can't do both but there are many examples of celebrities which show it's possible."

Reflecting on the day Jermain added: "I absolutely loved it. I love Luton and the University. I have quite a few friends who study here, it's a great place. Duayne is a friend and I will do anything I can to help my friends. If I can help raise aspirations and inspire people in any way, it's only right that I do so."

Kathryn Wolfe, Senior Lecturer in Media Performance and Course co-ordinator Television Production at Bedfordshire, said: "This event is a collaborative assessment we put on each year, and each year we add more to it and it becomes a little bit harder for our new students who have been here just over a term.

"There were many jobs involved including lights, sound, set, directing, floor management, camera, vision mixing, graphics, streaming and much more. And it was all completed in front of a live guest audience, and indeed the world where anyone could be watching online!

"These students responded fantastically well to the challenge, producing a top-quality show using the very best of the equipment we have at the University including the new LED lighting.

"This is real-life experience the students are gaining here, so we can't wait to see how these undergraduates progress."

Maria Wiener, Senior Lecturer in BA (Hons) Media Performance, added: "Every year this joint assessment between Media Performance students as interviewers and TV Production students as members of the technical support for the TV Studio recording and directors of the interviews raises a brand new challenge for students and staff. We are always trying to improve the standard and broadcast outcome. The result is that this experience becomes even more exciting year by year.

"This year students were trained throughout the first term through various masterclasses organised by both courses to raise to this challenge and perform at a professional standard. In this way we mirror the TV Industry and students are given a unique chance to practice the necessary skills that could aid them in their future careers. This experience is very rewarding and enjoyable by both students, staff and our live audience. Congratulations to all the students and our technical support staff that were involved to make this event a success!"
