Pastor Lawrence Fagbayi won the ‘Luton in Harmony’ category of the Luton’s Best Awards 2014 for his work in “bringing together all sectors of the local society, to encourage diversity and peace”.

A Pastor at The Gospel Pentecostal Reconciliation and Restoration Centre in Birdsfoot Lane, Lawrence, 56, has lived in Luton for 15 years and is in the second year of studying Psychology and Criminology as he looks to further his “understanding of people and how they react”.

“I’ve lived in Luton for a long time and I am very passionate about the place. It can get a bad reputation at times, so I’ve done all I can to address this.

“I set up the Neighbours Together group which welcomes all members of society, no matter their race or religion, to join up and learn new things. For example in April we will be looking at how people can stay on track with their New Year’s resolutions.

“I’m determined to help in whatever way I can and that’s why I decided to go to university to further myself and help the cause of Luton. I chose this university as I saw the positive impact it has on the local area and I wanted to be a part of that. So far I am really enjoying the course and learning new things. It’s going very well.”

Despite all Lawrence’s achievements, he said he never expected to be distinguished in such a way.

“I was totally surprised! I’m just trying to do my bit for the community – to be an ambassador to help Luton and to create peace. So it’s quite amazing, I’m very honoured.”

The Luton’s Best Awards, now in its fifth year, is sponsored by the University.
