Young and old listeners to 'Exchange' music on new Radio LaB show
Wed 18 February, 2015A new Radio LaB show is to target two different local communities by pitting young and old music listeners against each other.
Each week, four-part series The Exchange will see a student from Luton Sixth Form College (LSFC) and a volunteer from Age Concern Luton exchange song selections.
Terry Lee, Coordinator of Radio LaB, the University of Bedfordshire’s community station, said:
“The Exchange isn’t just a radio series, it’s a social experiment, and the results have been very interesting.
“In these four programmes you’ll hear music of all genres, you’ll hear honest responses, you’ll hear friendships being created. Each programme is completely individual, and a compelling listen.
“Radio LaB is committed to working with local partner organisations to make radio programmes that reflect our target communities.”
Obtaining its licence in 2010, student-run Radio LaB maintains a heavy community focus across Bedfordshire. Tune in to 97.1fm to hear everything from news to a diverse range of music.
The Exchange is part of an on-going partnership between Radio LaB and the BTEC Radio course at Luton Sixth Form College, over the last four years.
Andrew Waterfield, a media teacher at LSFC, says the project is invaluable for College students’ university aspirations:
“Students from Luton Sixth Form College loved getting involved as it gives them invaluable and real broadcast radio experience,” he said. “Their involvement with Radio LaB has seriously increased their employability.
“The Exchange has been a great opportunity and experience for everyone, testament to the show’s and Radio LaB’s community-wide focus.”
In line with Ofcom key commitments (the broadcast media’s regulatory body), the programme tailors for two communities: young people in the Luton area and the over 55s in Luton.
The show launches on 22nd February at 9am, running at the same time for four consecutive Sundays.
