Top five tips to prepare for A-level results day
Mon 10 August, 2015Susie King, Head of Admissions at the University of Bedfordshire, presents her top tips on how to prepare for A-level results day and find the right course and university through Clearing.
1. Consider your options
If you know you want to follow the higher education route, consider where you want to go geographically and what type of institution you want to study at. For instance, here at the University of Bedfordshire we place a lot of emphasis on widening access to education – making it available to high-achieving students, no matter their social background – so if that’s the type of environment you want to study in, focus on universities who offer that.
Don’t just look at generic university league tables. Be specific; delve into subject tables and evaluate separate factors such as student feedback and satisfaction.
2. Plan for different grade outcomes
You should have a rough of idea of the grades and UCAS points you need to be accepted by the universities you’ve already applied to. It’s important, though, to acknowledge the possibility of your grades being higher or lower than expected. From there you can think about which universities and courses are possibilities in best- and worst-case scenarios.
3. Research your courses
In order to make a planned, thoughtful and considered decision, it’s of vast importance to research any courses available in Clearing that you are interested in. Don’t just look for degree names and tariff points; be thorough, read up on the units making up each stage of the courses, find out whether work placements are included, and analyse how your work will be assessed.
Most importantly, research what career paths your chosen courses will precipitate and how each university will support your employability in general – at Bedfordshire, for example, 92% of graduates are in further education or work within six months.
4. Speak to your potential universities
It’s always a good idea to contact your potential universities directly. Ask them any questions you are unsure on and find out the availability of the courses you have researched.
Some, including Bedfordshire, will even afford you the chance to speak to academics involved with the course(s) you are interested in. They’ll be able to give you first-hand knowledge of the logistics and practicalities of the course, as well as demonstrating their vision for the future.
5. Stay calm and be patient
Clearing is a very busy and frantic time of year, for those making offers as well as those accepting them (you!).
The key is to remain calm, patient and without haste, in order to make the most mature decision you can. Don’t rush into accepting an offer you aren’t certain on; even more reason to follow steps one to four!
