Students create learning resources
Tue 23 September, 2014An innovative collaborative project between the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences and the Centre for Learning Excellence at the University of Bedfordshire has encouraged students to act as co-creators for learning resources, alongside academics.
The two-day workshop provided an excellent platform for healthy debates between teachers and learners leading to relevant, reusable and high quality content of the resources envisaged.
The resources created at the workshop will be further developed, evaluated and published as Reusable Learning Objects (RLOs) to make it openly accessible to learners and teachers within and outside the University.
Dr Shuby Puthussery, from the Faculty of Health and Social Sciences who is leading the project said, "The overall aim is to support blended learning, student experience and employability through developing and evaluating two student co-created e-learning resources. The project adopts a student-centred approach, and a key feature is that academic staff and students are involved at every stage."
One of the workshop participants, Mavis Spencer, Deputy Director of Nursing, NHS England - East Anglia said, "The workshop proved to be a great way of working with new colleagues and tutors. Working on the topic of NHS reforms, our group incorporated our experience and knowledge of the NHS into learning resources for students. It enabled us to be creative and think of different ways to make e-learning exciting and informative."
MSc Public Health Student Okere Nkiruka, from Nigeria, said, "The concept of co-creation is awesome and to actually experience it at the workshop was incredible. I can't wait for the final stages of the project to be complete and to see the knowledge that was harnessed at the workshop turned into learning resources."
Another MSc Public Health student, Dr Shyam Bhika from India, who has a background in dental surgery, added: ''It was a great experience participating in the workshop. It proved to be a different learning experience and gave us the opportunity to contribute to a more effective way of learning. I would recommend all those who are interested in making a change in the way they learn, to actively take part in such events.''
The project is part of Steps, a University-funded initiative, which focuses on introducing, changing or enhancing aspects of the student experience at Bedfordshire identified by students and staff as ripe for change.
