Student in a Million award for University of Bedfordshire Student
Thu 18 September, 2014A third year psychology student from the University of Bedfordshire, Kavisigah Yogaratnam, has been recognised as a ‘Student in a Million’.
'Student in a Million' is an annual award introduced by The Student Room, the largest student community in the world with over 1.5 million members. People from all over the country can nominate students whose achievements deserve to be recognised and celebrated – those 'one in a million'.
This year The Student Room received hundreds of nominations and shortlisted 12 students, in four categories.
Kavisigah was one of four students to receive awards, winning in the ‘Overcoming Adversity’ category.
Yogaratnam was complimentary about her experience as a student in the Department of Psychology at the University of Bedfordshire, thanking the University and especially her dissertation supervisor, Dr Maja Jankowska, and final year project unit coordinator, Dr Christopher Hand, for the support she received.
“This definitely wouldn't have happened without the support of the University and my tutors, especially Dr Maja. I hope that other students will be motivated by my award and face through their struggles to complete their studies,” said Kavisigah.
Dr Maja Jankowska said: “I am very proud of Kavisigah and incredibly happy for her. She was truly one in a million and deserves this award. I was very impressed with how she managed to focus on her work and persevere despite all the hardships and difficulties.
“Contributing to the education of somebody like Kavisigah is a privilege. She is a fine example of Higher Education’s potential to transform lives.”
Jason Geall, CEO, The Student Room said “Our Student in a Million awards are a real highlight of the year for everyone at The Student Room. These awards give us the opportunity to put the spotlight on students who are doing amazing things and to celebrate them. We’re hugely proud of all the students who were shortlisted in this year’s awards and congratulate them all on their hard work and achievements.”
The University, which is preparing to receive its next intake of new students at the end of September, still has a limited number of places available for a September 2014 start – including for courses run by the Department of Psychology.
