University of Bedfordshire Art and Design Degree show launches this week
Mon 16 June, 2014Artwork which was shortlisted for a national award and displayed in an exhibition at the London Transport Museum will be among the stunning pieces on show at this year's University of Bedfordshire Art and Design Degree Show.
The week-long event, entitled 14AD, which is open to the public and last year attracted hundreds of people from across the area as well many industry specialists, will feature the best work created by students in their final year at the University's School of Art and Design
Included in this year's Show, which opens with a private view on Thursday 19 June, is Shaun Michel's 'Central Line Aircraft Factory'.
The piece was designed as part of a live brief for all Bedfordshire's third-year Graphic Design undergraduates to demonstrate 'London Stories' for this year's Association of Illustrators (AOI) Serco prize for Illustration Award.
Some 1,500 pieces were submitted nationwide for the Award, and Shaun's piece finished in the top 15, gaining a place in AOI's exhibition at the Transport Museum.
"After a lot of research, I discovered an aircraft factory which was hidden in the London Underground's Central Line," explained Shaun, from Croydon.
"I knew this would be a really good basis to work from and I designed this piece using various techniques by hand and on PC. I was confident with my story, but I was honoured to finish as a high as I did; it gave me a real boost and more confidence in my work."
At 14AD, Shaun's creation will be among the wide-range of more than 200 students' work varying from illustrations, fine art, animation and advertising design to graphic design, interior design and fashion.
Running until 26 June, the University's innovative new School of Art and Design on Guildford Street, in Luton will be awash with displays.
Colin Davies, Head of Art and Design, said: "The degree show in June will bring to the close an exciting year for art and design at the University: a move to a new space and new creative relationships with industry.
"With so much building development at the University, including a new library and dramatic extension to the Bedford campus the branding of the show has taken its theme to be 'the aesthetics of construction'."
The School of Art and Design, which is situated at the former Alexon Building, will be open to the public from 9am until 8pm weekdays, and from 9am until 5pm Saturday 21 June.
