University of Bedfordshire unveils international artist’s sculpture
Mon 04 August, 2014The University of Bedfordshire and internationally renowned artist, Cedric Christie, have teamed up to erect an art sculpture at the Luton campus that “represents the meeting of minds at the University”.
Cedric, who is represented by Flowers Gallery (which boasts studios in London and New York), said: “The aim was for the sculpture to represent the coming together of differences and a meeting of minds at the University of Bedfordshire, with the strands of ribbon representing different factors, including the various backgrounds and cultures the staff and students come from.
“Considering this is the first piece of work I’ve designed for an outdoor public space, I’m really pleased with how it looks.”
Taking four years to make, the London-born artist’s sculpture is situated outside the University’s Postgraduate and Continuing Professional Development Centre which overlooks St Mary’s Church.
The 52 year old was given the honour of carving the sculpture after emerging victorious in a competition – organised by the University’s School of Art and Design – featuring 15 other UK artists.
Colin Davies, Head of Art and Design at the University of Bedfordshire, added: “This public art commission from an internationally-recognised artist like Cedric is great for Luton, and reflects the confidence and the dynamism of the University as a whole.”
In a career that’s seen his work feature in exhibitions for 20 years, Cedric, who has lectured on both sides of the Atlantic, uses everyday objects such as snooker balls and scaffolding to explore a broad range of cultural and art historical references.
