An organ donation specialist from the University of Bedfordshire will be providing expert advice to watchers of an Asian TV phone-in show tomorrow (Thursday) night.

Professor Gurch Randhawa will be offering guidance on the issue – often considered a difficult topic among the Asian population – on Zee TV's interactive live, topical programme, Zee Companion.

A Professor of Diversity in Public Health, Gurch is a passionate supporter of raising awareness of organ donation among different communities across the UK – spreading the important message that donating your organs after death can help save and transform lives.

Gurch is a key member of the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) Transplant Alliance – set up by the Department of Health – and in 2013 authored action plans to boost organ donation rates among religious communities.

This plan resulted in the delivery of a programme of educational outreach events across London.

He said: “Every year, 180 people from these ethnic groups die waiting for a transplant because of a chronic shortage of suitable organs. People from BAME communities are also three times more likely to need an organ transplant than the rest of the population, yet under two per cent of people from these communities have recorded their wish to donate on the NHS Organ Donor Register.”

Gurch, who lectures students in the University’s Institute for Health Research (IHR), will be taking questions on the show, Organ Donation - Still a Stigma?, from 6.30pm.

On Sky channel 788, viewers will be able to call, email, or post on Facebook or Twitter to ask their questions to Gurch or air their views on the matter.
